On a bitterly cold Good Friday, Jim Hume MSP joined our volunteers Robin Richardson and Roberta Macmillan to make grocery deliveries to Food Train customers around rural Annandale & Eskdale. Speaking to Food Train CEO Michelle McCrindle beforehand he said how much he was looking forward to getting out and seeing first hand how important Food Train's regular grocery deliveries are to older people and the wonderful efforts of Food Train volunteers particulalry given how tough this winter has been, services like Food Train are all the more important.
On Wednesday 21st November, Claudia Beamish MSP welcomed Food Train staff, volunteers and members and invited guests to celebrate 17 years of success and highlight the good work Food Train does across Scotland. It was a great occasion thoroughly enjoyed by everyone attending. Scottish Labour Leader Johann Lamont MSP attended and spoke of the importance of services like Food Train helping older people live at home for longer. Food Train Chairman Dr Rob Wells took the opportunity at the event to announce the location of our next new Food Train in Scotland, which is .......... GLASGOW!
Involved from idea to reality Jean Mundell MBE played a starring role in the early years of Food Train. Her drive and determination were legendary and Food Train's survival through tough early years were mainly down to Jean's tenacity. Failing health made it difficult for her to be as involved in her latter years but she kept a watchful eye and remained active in setting the strategic direction of the Charity right up to her death in 2006. Food Train were thrilled to learn that Jean had been selected by a community vote to be commemorated forever with a portrait bench in Dumfries alongside JM Barrie (creater of Peter Pan) and Kirkpatrick McMillan (inventor of the bicycle). It was with great pride that staff, volunteers and members past and present joined together to see the unveiling of the bench. Jean would be enourmously proud to be honoured this way and would be delighted with the progress Food Train is making all over Scotland.
