Food Train Volunteers

We have kind and caring volunteers all over Scotland, bringing friendship and joy to older people’s lives whilst providing much needed practical help. Our volunteers are vital to the success of Food Train and without them we simply wouldn’t be able to operate.

The best thing about volunteering is that you can choose to do as little or as much as you want. We have a variety of roles depending on where you live and what part of Food Train you want to volunteer with. By volunteering for us you can utilise your own skills and experience to help make a difference in your local community.

As a Food Train volunteer, you will receive all the support and information required to complete your role safely and confidently and we firmly believe that you shouldn’t be out of pocket, so we offer reasonable reimbursement of expenses.

Some of our roles will require you to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme because you will be working directly with vulnerable adults. But don’t worry, we will support you through the whole process and you will not be expected to pay for this yourself.

If you are aged 16 or over and would like to make a difference to older people’s lives, then why not join us? We are proud to be a welcoming, inclusive charity and are keen to hear from people of all communities, abilities, backgrounds and walks of life. For more information contact your local branch here or complete our volunteer application form here.

Current Opportunities

Volunteer Shoppers

Volunteer shoppers work in teams in the local supermarkets making up the orders for our customers. This involves the checking of the order whilst shopping, putting the goods through the check out and loading them into boxes, ready for the drivers and helpers to deliver back to the customers. Volunteer shoppers generally shop weekly or fortnightly. It is also very useful to have volunteers who can be relief shoppers, who can be called upon occasionally when regular shoppers are not available.

Food Train Connects Shopping Friend

In this role, the Food Train Connects team will connect you with an older person living nearby who requires help with their weekly shopping. You will collect your customer’s shopping list, do the shopping and deliver to their home using your own transport or on foot. This role is suited to anyone with a spare hour or so in the week and lives within any area of Scotland without a Food Train branch.

Volunteer Drivers

Accompanied by delivery helpers, our volunteer drivers collect shopping lists from the customer’s homes, load the orders from the supermarket into the vans, deliver the orders to the customers and unpack the shopping when required. Food Train supplies vans for this work so volunteers do not need to own or use their own vehicles. Our driving roles normally require at least a day’s commitment.

Volunteer Delivery Helpers

Delivery helpers go out with the Food Train vans around the local area collecting shopping lists or making grocery deliveries to our customers, providing vital social contact along with the shopping. This role will involve cash handling and helping to write the customers shopping lists. If you can spare one day per week or fortnight then this role could be for you.

At Home Volunteers

For this role volunteers may be required to drive a van, but their main job is to do small tasks around the house that our customers find difficult to do for themselves. These may include inside window cleaning, fridge cleaning, light bulb changing, smoke alarm testing, basic home safety checks and any small jobs required (not anything that would require a tradesperson). Time commitment for the At Home role varies depending on the jobs.

Befriender Volunteers

If you like chatting, meeting people and getting out and about this could be the role for you. Our volunteer befrienders take part in home visits, phone calls, trips, outings and clubs. Time commitment will vary in this role depending on the befriending activity and full training is provided.

Food Train Connects Phone Friend

In the volunteer phone friend role, the Connects team will connect you with one or more older people who would welcome a regular blether on the phone. You will call your ‘friends’ usually weekly or fortnightly (as agreed between you) and use the time to simply have a blether, check in on the individual’s wellbeing, allow them to share any current worries or concerns if they have any and importantly share a laugh where possible. If you identify any concerns or potential additional support needs, you will relay this to the staff team, who will follow up.

Library Volunteers (West Lothian only)

As a library volunteer your role would involve collecting books selected by our customers from the local libraries and delivering them to their homes. Our volunteers welcome staying for a cuppa and a chat when visiting our members at home. In this role volunteers may be required to drive a van and it typically requires a commitment of a day per week or fortnight which is usually a Wednesday.

Meal Makers Volunteers

If you love to cook and would be happy to share an extra portion with an older neighbour who would really appreciate a home cooked meal, then this could be the volunteering opportunity for you. We’ll match you with someone who likes the same sort of foods as you and lives within your community. How often meals are shared is decided between you and the older person.
